Description
Although research shows OER can have advantages, recent studies show that the development and reuse of OER in Higher Education is low despite the growing amount of open licensed teaching materials accessible (Allen & Seaman, 2014; Schuwer & Janssen, 2016). Experiences in the Netherlands with the online community environment ‘Wikiwijs’ showed that creating a community on its own is not sufficient to realizing OER adoption in curricula (Schuwer, Kreijns, & Vermeulen, 2014). The question arose how OER adoption research and open practice notions can support learner success. Hence, we concluded that Dutch Higher Education Institutes are in need of a comprehensive tool for accelerating and monitoring the uptake of OER (re)use within their institution. In the Adoption Accelerator toolkit six themes influencing adoption are explored: teacher learning, content curation, open educational practices, organization, policy, and community. The toolkit focuses on enhancing awareness about these different adoption aspects in existing curricula: your own working context is starting point.
In this workshop at OER18 we demonstrate the Adoption Accelerator in 60 minutes using a hands-on approach. Due to time constraints, the demonstration focus is on only two aspects of the Adoption Accelerator: Open Educational Practices and Content Curation. You will map your current situation in a maturity model and will formulate your ambition and corresponding action plan. In addition to our toolkit, you will be introduced to our curated collection of open education toolkits from other parties. For each theme in the Adoption Accelerator toolkit we selected existing tools. Concluding there is an interactive discussion about how the Adoption Accelerator could be used in one’s own context. The complete toolkit is available for download under a CC-BY license. It takes a full day to run the full workshop within your own institution.
