Description
Not far from Bristol is a land where hundreds of thousands of people still speak an ancient Celtic language. That language is Welsh. Supporting the development of the Welsh language through education has its challenges, with far fewer open educational resources available to support teaching in Welsh then there are in English. This talk will highlight the ways the Welsh language ‘Wicipedia’ is being developed[i], in collaboration with Welsh publishers and content producers, in order to increase the inclusivity of Welsh speakers, by increasing access to important information in their native tongue, from content on health[ii] and pop music to topics covered by the syllabus for primary and secondary schools. Discover how Welsh universities are contributing to Wicipedia, using it simultaneously as a platform for teaching and as a way of increasing the quality of this open educational resource for all Welsh speakers. This presentation will highlight the power of Wikipedia as both a teaching and learning tool in a multilingual environment and will encourage people to think about strategies for using Wikipedia as a platform for unlocking and promoting educational resources in minority languages.
